The talk examined Italy’s economic outlook, noting modest recovery alongside risks from geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, and rising energy costs. While structural challenges persist, such as high energy prices and demographic decline, Italy is improving energy efficiency, expanding renewables, and considering new energy strategies.
Speakers highlighted significant progress in Italy’s financial markets. AI was identified as a key opportunity, with Italy focusing on AI adoption to boost productivity, modernize public services, and mitigate workforce challenges. The discussion also covered digital finance developments, European integration, and growth opportunities in sectors like defense and infrastructure. Overall, the outlook remains cautiously positive, though dependent on managing geopolitical risks, inflation, and global economic uncertainty.
When ICEED asked about Italy’s position on AI governance within a global context, Mr. Barbieri Hermitte said Italy views AI as a highly transformative technology and supports its development, while placing a strong emphasis on addressing ethical risks and regulatory frameworks. AI governance was a key priority during Italy’s 2024 G7 presidency, reflecting its commitment to international dialogue and responsible innovation.
