On December 4-5, 2024, the International Council on Environmental Economics and Development (ICEED) attended the annual summit of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) in Belgrade, Serbia.

More than 1,000 AI experts and policymakers attended the 2024 GPAI Summit, which included representatives from 44 countries across six continents. From ICEED, Chief of Executive Board & Committee Ken Kitatani, Senior Executive Director Kazunao Sato, Senior Advisor Marko Grobelnik, and staff engaged in several productive discussions about how to foster AI’s great potential via international collaboration.
Through its integration into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in July 2024, GPAI has become a significant forum for advancing international discussions on fostering human-centric, safe, secure, and trustworthy AI. This agenda is grounded in the principles outlined in the OECD Recommendation on AI, first adopted in 2019. GPAI’s mission is supported by a diverse expert community, with expert support centers in Canada, France, and Japan playing a pivotal role in shaping and implementing GPAI’s work plan through practical projects.
The summit ended with a Ministerial Declaration that reaffirmed the commitment of the GPAI member states to collaborate in advancing responsible AI development. ICEED will continue to engage with and support the OECD-GPAI integrated partnership as it works to drive high-quality, science-based, and inclusive joint projects in the AI field, ensuring that AI advancements are ethical, equitable, and beneficial to all.
