Hosted by Colonel Jan Østrup-Møller, Chief of Staff and MA to the Commandant of the NATO Defense College, Lieutenant General Max A.L.T. Nielsen, the recent exchange between ICEED and the NATO Defense College offered more than formalities—it marked a pivotal moment in aligning strategic foresight with global defense education. On December 10, 2024, ICEED’s high-level delegation arrived at the NDC headquarters in Rome to explore how environmental economics and institutional resilience can shape tomorrow’s security frameworks.

Established in 1951 and headquartered in Rome since 1966, the NDC is NATO’s premier strategic-level educational institution. It educates senior civilian and military leaders from NATO and partner countries on strategic challenges and decision-making processes. The NDC emphasizes fostering solidarity through consensus-based approaches, strategic thinking, and cultural understanding. Building on ICEED’s engagement at the NATO Defense College Foundation’s Energy Strategies conference last spring, ICEED was pleased to further solidify its relationship with the NDC through this official visit, reinforcing our shared commitment to addressing global security and economic challenges.

The visit marked a new chapter in a growing relationship between the two institutions—building on ICEED’s previous participation at the NATO Defense College Foundation’s Energy Strategies conference last spring.
As the NATO Defense College works consistently to adapt its curriculum to emerging global challenges, integrating the strategic and ethical implications of artificial intelligence is high on its agenda. During the visit, NDC officials expressed optimism about how ICEED could support the NDC in developing new work programs and adapting the NDC’s curricula to keep pace with new technological changes. Through ongoing collaboration, ICEED hopes to strengthen the NDC’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific, foster deeper partnerships, enhance strategic dialogue, and promote shared solutions to today’s global security and economic sustainability challenges
